How to Store Herbs and Spices

herbs and spicesYou can get fresh herbs leaf or dry herbs. Herbs and spices can be crushed with a mortar and pestle, by using a rolling pin with spices between two cloths, or by using the back of a spoon in a cup. Check ground or crushed herbs and spices for freshness at least once a year. If no aroma is detected after crushing, the seasoning needs to be replaced.

How to store herbs:   Store away from moisture, in tightly covered, air tight container.  

How to store spices:   Store in a cool place. Never store front of the window, in sunlight, or close of heat sources.

In hot temperature, store spices such as paprika, red pepper, and chili powder in the refrigerator to  maintain quality.

Whole: 2 to 5 years

Ground Spices: 6 to 24 months

Leafy Herbs: 3 to 24 months

Dehydrated Vegetables: 6 months

Use dried versus fresh herbs: 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoons of dried herbs = 1 tablespoon fresh herbs.
