High Fat Diet for Pregnant Women is Risky

A recent research conducted at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford says that mothers who are into a high-fat diet before and during pregnancy put their unborn children at risk from birth defects.

The study, which used mice as subjects, revealed that a combination of a high fat diet and deficiency of a gene called Cited2 (which aids in preventing serious heart diseases) heightens the risk of congenital heart defects.

Although it has been known that an unhealthy diet and poor genes can impact the development of the child while inside the mother’s womb, the combination of the two has been seen to cause a much higher risk in terms of development of more serious health problems.
