Why Most People Don't Diet?

The notion that Americans are obsessed with diets and losing weight is not very accurate.

Sure, Americans spend $33 billion each year on anything that has to do with weight loss, be it slimming pills, books, exercise equipment or gym memberships. But this is not an accurate measure of commitment to losing weight.

The thing is, people spend money on all these things – they may actually stick to their diet and exercise programs for a few months – but after a while, they drop everything all together.

Numbers and figures

As surprising as it is, the fact is that most Americans are not trying to lose weight. In 2004, the CDC reported that Americans are eating now more than ever. Women are actually eating more than 300 calories a day than they did more than 30 years ago. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and yet less than one-third exercise regularly.

This comes from the fact that losing weight is just not that important to people.

In a 1993 Yankelovich survey, the results showed that more than half of Americans said that they were not at all concerned about watching their weight. Studies also show that less than a quarter of Americans are on a diet.

Glamour magazine conducted a survey involving 11,000 participants. The subjects were asked what they would give up to lose weight permanently. The results showed that three-fourths would not give up dessert, while only 41 percent would pay $3,000 to be thin forever. And, almost one-thirds said that they would not give up anything to lose weight.

Too much effort

It all boils down to the fact that it’s too much effort for most of us. Americans simply want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to eat and not gain weight. The proven methods of diet and exercise takes just too much will power for us.

The myth that diets don’t work is just that – a myth. Diets don’t fail. People do. It’s not your diet book who ate pizza and dessert. Your treadmill won’t do all the work for you.

We have hundreds of diets programs, exercise regimens and workout equipments. But they’re worthless unless you do something with them.
