A recent study have gotten researchers scratching their heads after finding out that patients with implanted defibrillator devices who regularly take fish oil supplements had sooner and recurrent bouts of ventricular tachycardia, wherein a heart ventricle quivers to the point that it prevents it from pumping blood, compared to those patients who take the placebo.
The study was conducted by a controlled trial in 200 patients who were randomized to take either fish oil or placebo.
Does this study make fish oil supplements harmful to your health? Probably not, but people with an implanted defibrillator would be advised not to take fish oil supplements and instead find alternative products that also contain omega-3 fatty acids such as flax seed oil or marine algae supplements.
