If your child eats a lot of junk food, including fast food, you need to monitor how much they eat. Junk foods include cakes, chips, sodas, and many processed foods that lack in nutrition, and loaded with fats, sugars, and empty calories. Here are some of the reasons why children should minimize, even avoid, their junk food intake.
Child obesity – Many junk foods are high in calories, sugar, and fats, all of which increases the risk of a child becoming overweight or obese. A child with a body mass index (BMI) above 25 are considered overweight, while a BMI above 30 is considered obese. Excess weight not only limits a child’s quality of life, but also places them at risk of developing a variety of health problems such as type 2 diabetes, bone and joint problems, shortness of breath, and sleep apnea.
High blood pressure – Junk foods are commonly high in sodium, which can contribute to high blood pressure and even hypertension. This condition spares no one, including children who eat too much salty chips. Children with high blood pressure must get medical treatment to avoid complications ranging from damage to the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes.
Constipation – Because junk foods are not a good source of fiber, children who eat a lot of junk food end up constipated. A child is considered to be suffering from constipation if he or she has less then three bowel movements a week or if the stool is hard or dry. Fiber helps prvent constipation because it moves wastes through the digestive tract quicker, as well as creates bulkier and softer stools.
Children who eat a lot of junk food also suffer from other diseases including tooth decay, fatty liver disease, gall stones, and heartburn.
