What Is Green-Lipped Mussel (GLM)?

Green-lipped mussel, also known as GLM is a type of shellfish that is more commonly found in New Zealand where they are farmed and is a popular culinary treat in the country. Aside from being harvested fas food, green-lipped mussels are also known to have certain medicinal properties that may benefit a lot of people. And because of this, it has become quite popular as a dietary supplement among people looking for alternative means of treating certain health conditions and ailments.

Green-lipped mussel or GLM supplements are believed to have certain anti-inflammatory effects. Extracts from the New Zealand shellfish has been found to be useful in treating inflammatory diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Green-lipped mussels seem to inhibit inflammation in the body. Although inflammation is considered a normal occurrence, persistent and excessive ones can lead to pain as well as damage to the joints.

Inflammation is mainly caused when the body starts producing certain chemical mediators that bring about the symptom. By using green-lipped mussel extracts to treat certain inflammatory conditions, dependence on other anti-inflammatory drugs may be reduced. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAID’s such as aspirin and ibuprofen are often used when inflammatory symptoms come up. But such drugs also have the tendency to produce stomach irritation with frequent use that can sometimes lead to stomach ulcers. By using green-lipped mussel extracts, the development of stomach ulcers for taking NSAID’s.

Using green-lipped mussel extracts as supplements or for treating inflammation also has its own side effects. Some of the more known side effects include fluid retention and nausea. GLM supplements are also not recommended for people who experience allergic reactions to shellfish.
