Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, is an essential compound that is produced by the human body necessary for normal cell functioning. It has since become a popular supplement known to offer a variety of benefits ranging from alleviating certain heart problems to cancers.
The primary role that Coenzyme Q10 plays in the body has to do with its energy generating functions. CoQ10 is used by the body in order to transform food into ATP or adenosine triphosphate, the compound that the body uses for energy. And for this, they are usually found highly concentrated in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion, cells also known as the body’s power houses. Taking Coenzyme Q10 supplements is also said to have the following benefits.
Coenzyme Q10 levels seem to be low in people suffering from certain metabolic disorders. In such cases, patients do not have the capacity to produce enough CoQ10 for the body to use. That is why CoQ10 supplements are sometimes used as part of treatments for such disorders.
High Blood Pressure
Initial studies have shown that people with hypertension also are found to have low CoQ10 levels in their blood. Some research studies also suggest that CoQ10 may be able to lower down blood pressure. Whether Coenzyme Q10 may be directly related to hypertension or not still remains unclear. Additional long-term research on the subject is still required.
Coenzyme Q10 has also been known to have a beneficial effect on migraine sufferers. Studies that have been done so far have been considered small. Yet the results show that Coenzyme Q10 show significant results in trying to alleviate migraine headaches in patients.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
CoQ10 may also help in the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms. With its primary function in energy generation in the body, CoQ10 may very well help improve symptoms caused by fatigue related disorders. But further research is still required to clearly see the role that CoQ10 plays as treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome.
