The Hawthorn Plant

The Crataegus plant commonly known as Hawthorn is usually found in North Africa, North America, Western Asia and Europe. The helpful substance of this shrub is said to be often standardized in its flower and leaves extract. The extract of its leaves and flowers are mostly used for making herbal medicine centuries ago so to ease sore throat and edema. Today, the berries and not the leaves and flowers of this shrub alone are being used for many helpful medicines.

The fluid extracted from this plant is used so to heal hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmia, angina, kidney disorders, congestive heart failure and other heart problems. Hawthorn contains many types of bioflavonoid which is said to be responsible for the cardiac actions of the shrub. According to research flavanoid polymers have been concluded to be a substance with low toxicity, strong and prolonged cardio tonic effects, detoxifying properties and profound hypertensive activity.

Although the Crataegus has several benefits for the health it may also have its own downfalls as it may have several side effects for other people especially when not used properly. Hypertensive effect may be present when the medicine containing hawthorn is consumed with beta-blockers.

This herb also inhibits potassium cellular influx that is why the use of drugs having the same effects must be avoided for it may affect the patient’s health badly. Sedation, dizziness, tremor, cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension are the common signs of overdosing. The drug must be off limits to pregnant women during its first trimester as well as to children under the age of twelve.
