While the main goal of other diets is to lose weight, the MIND diet aims to promote better brain health and slow down cognitive decline. Basically, the MIND diet is formulated in order to help prevent the progressive onset of Alzheimer’s disease. This neurodegenerative disease can cause memory loss and confusion, especially among the elderly. It is also called the most common form of dementia.

With the MIND diet plan, people who are at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other related neurodegenerative conditions may be able to slow down its onset. The name stand’s for Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay. It is a hybrid of the Mediterranean and the DASH diet, which are essentially known as plant-based diets. Although there are many similarities to these three diets, the MIND diet is the only one that recommends eating foods that are known to promote cognitive health.

MIND Diet Staples

The emphasis of the MIND diet is on consuming plant-based foods and limiting the intake of meat products and other foods that are high in saturated fats. A MIND diet plan can consists of meals that include a lot of green, leafy vegetables and flavonoid-rich berries. There are studies that indicate a relationship between consuming more greens with lower inflammation and oxidative stress. These are the two factors that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Oxidative stress happens when the antioxidants in the body are not enough to fight off the toxic free radicals in the body. This can cause cell damage in the brain as well as in other parts of the body, leading to conditions like Alzheimer’s and cancer.
