Healthy Road Trip Snack Options

Snacking on the road is never a problem. Most gas stations offer ready to eat snacks and foods. Unfortunately, these foods are not very healthy. Experts suggest snacking on the following foods:

Fruits and Veggies

On your next road trip, forget about chips. Instead opt for fruits and vegetables that you can eat on the way, such as bananas, apples, cherries, and grapes. For veggies, go for carrots and celery sticks. To make snacks more interesting for your kids, prepare dips to go with their fruits and/or veggies, like honey, cinnamon and cream cheese, or low-fat ranch or thousand island dressing.

Always pack your veggies and fruits in the cooler and remember to bring a pocket knife for trimming.

Nuts and Dried fruit

Nuts and fruits are another healthy roadtrip snack alternative. They are also easy to pack and not messy to eat. Go for whole almonds to go with cranberries, or pecans and pears.

Trail mix

If your kids don’t enjoy fruits and nuts by themselves, add chocolate pieces in the mix. Though chocolates are high in calories, there are enough fibers in the fruits and nuts to counter that.

Trail enchiladas

This snack is healthy and easy to prepare. Simply spread cream cheese on a whole grain tortilla, add fruits and nuts, then roll it up like regular enchiladas

Cookies

Go for the healthy variety like oatmeal or fruits and nuts. These cookies are rich in fiber and are filling, plus kids them find them delicious enough to be satisfied. Pick cookies that are tough enough to stand the passing and handling of travel.
