Essential Foods With Bad Reputations

EggsThere are quite a lot of foods that may have received a bad reputation among those who wish to eat healthy. There are a number of essential foods that may be avoided by many people because of these not so accurate perception about them being unhealthy. Here are just some of them:

Eggs

A number of people may avoid eating eggs as part of their diet mainly because of its reputation as high in dietary cholesterol which many believed may affect heart health. But recent studies have shown that saturated fats and trans fats are more capable of raising blood cholesterol than dietary cholesterol. It should not solely be the reason to avoid eating eggs altogether.

Eggs are also known to make people more satisfied when eating them, making them eat less on their next meal. Eggs are also rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, compounds known to help reduce the risks of developing age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 50.

Beef

Beef also has a bad reputation of being high in saturated fat and dietary cholesterol, a good reason why people try to avoid them. But it is not merely enough to just avoid them. Lean cuts of beef may actually be a healthier choice. They are a low-fat source of protein and rich in iron, an essential mineral that helps get oxygen into the lungs and into other cells in the body. Instead of avoiding them totally, people may consider choosing lean cuts of beef with less marbling in them.

Potatoes

The bad rep of potatoes stem from being classed among foods that rank high on the glycemic index which make them bad for people with high blood sugar. But the glycemic index scale is not entirely an accurate metric to base healthy foods from those that are not. It may be a matter of preparing the potatoes that may make them a healthier option. After all, potatoes are known to be a good source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C, essential nutrients that the body also needs. If you eat a plain baked potato, it GI value would not matter that much.
