Cholesterol Lowering Foods

Cholesterol is a substance that the body needs for certain essential functions such as producing certain hormones, nutrients as well as bile acids that help with digestion. But the body usually needs only a small amount of cholesterol in the blood in order to accomplish these functions.

Excess cholesterol usually finds their way into the bloodstream and deposited in the arteries. Eventually these cholesterol deposits can lead to the narrowing as well as the eventual blockage of the arteries which can limit the supply of nutrients and oxygen especially to the heart.

High cholesterol levels have been linked to heart disease especially if the cholesterol deposits are found in the coronary arteries. Some may also be more at risk of having chest pains or even heart attacks. Lowering cholesterol levels may help avoid these conditions and the food that you eat accounts a lot. Here are some foods that may help lower your cholesterol levels.

Oat Products

Studies have shown that eating oat products have help decrease LDL or bad cholesterol levels. Oats and other high soluble fiber foods seem to lower cholesterol level in the bloodstream by grabbing onto cholesterol and then eliminating them from the body through the digestive system.

Almonds

Almonds have also been known to be a good cholesterol lowering food. Studies have shown that substances found in almond skins may help prevent LDL cholesterol from being oxidized. This may help prevent bad cholesterol from damaging the blood vessel lining that may otherwise lead to higher cardiovascular risk.

Fatty Fish

Salmon, sardines and anchovies are known to be good sources of omega 3 fatty acids. These substances are known to help lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL or good cholesterol levels in the blood. Good cholesterol helps transport the bad cholesterol into the liver where it can be effectively eliminated from the body.
