Salt adds flavor to any food, making it an indispensable ingredient to many recipes. Health wise, salt contains sodium, an essential nutrient that the body needs to function. The problem is that most people tend to consume more salt that what their body requires. Eventually, too much salt in your diet can lead to certain health conditions. Here are some of them.

Stomach Ulcers

Too much sodium in the diet can also lead to stomach ulcers. Sodium can worsen the damage to the stomach lining caused by an infection of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria. This bacterium is considered as the primary cause of stomach cancer in people.

Elevated Blood Pressure

Consuming too much salt can have an effect on your blood pressure. Taking more than 2,300 mg a day can cause your sodium levels to go up. This causes your body to hold more fluid and cause the heart to pump harder. This can lead to elevated blood pressure.

Kidney Stones

Too much salt in your body can also increase the amount of protein found in your urine. The elevated amount of protein found in urine is a considered as a major risk factor for kidney disease. A diet with unhealthy amounts of salt content can also risk the risk of developing kidney stones. This can cause extreme pain and the solution is either surgery to remove the stones or following a low-sodium diet.
