Trans fat has recently become a health issue among various consumer groups. The fact that recent studies have shown that trans fat may have a hand in increasing bad cholesterol levels in the body and decrease good cholesterol certainly can be something worth thinking about. What has made trans fat consumption a grave concern among consumers may have to do with the studies showing that its use may help increase low density lipoprotein or LDL (the bad cholesterol) and decrease HDL or good cholesterol levels. Trans fat are also known to cause more inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the body’s reaction to certain injuries. It appears that trans fat may aid in making the effect more serious. Trans fat appears to cause some damage to the cells lining the blood vessels. This can usually lead to a more serious type of inflammation.

Avoiding Trans Fat

The good thing today is that more and more manufacturers of food products are slowly but surely trying to lessen their use of trans fat as before. This can greatly help more and more people avoid the damaging effects of the said substance. But nevertheless, there are still some establishments that may be using trans fat. Knowing about them can help people better avoid trans fat consumption.

People should consider looking at restaurants known for their fried menus. Most of the times, these restaurants serving fried foods may still be using oil containing trans fat to fry them. Although there are restaurants that provide nutritional information on the food they serve, there are others who don’t as this is not yet a requirement. But still it may not harm to ask the establishments if they still use trans fat on their food preparations.

Another way to avoid trans fat is making reading food labels a habit. Food manufacturers are now required by the FDA to include trans fat content into the Nutritional Information labels at the back of the package. It may help provide consumers with the idea of how much trans fat a certain food stuff contains.
