A lot of fitness buffs consume protein shakes thinking that it could help them lose weight.
However, according to Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., of the Mayo Clinic, though manufacturers of protein shakes claim that their products decrease body fat, there is actually no evidence that support these claims.
Contents of protein shakes
Protein shake mixes and some-pre made shakes get their protein from soy. Others use dairy or egg. But while protein shakes are normally harmless, you should not expect them to help you drop those extra pounds. Protein does contain calories, so consuming a lot can make you gain pounds instead of lose some.
Eating a protein source as a part of a meal or snack is good for your diet. you will feel full for longer, which means you are likely to consume less calories throughout the day. Occasionally having a fortified protein shake a meal supplement is better than skipping a meal. But beware even of these fortified shakes – even if their label shows extra nutrients, they do not replace all the nutrients contained in whole foods such as fruits and vegetables.
Achieving weight loss
To lose weight, you have to balance your calorie intake with physical activity.
An average adult needs 46-56 grams of protein a day, depending on your body weight and overall health. As long as you eat a healthy and balanced diet, consuming extra protein is not necessary.
