The Worst Foods in America

The people behind the diet guide book "Eat This, Not That," David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding, provided a list of 20 worst foods that are readily available in American restaurants and supermarkets. The results were based on months of research consisting of nutritional info reading, food analysis, menu board inspections, and, to some extent, even eating some of the foods that are being tested.

The foods that are included in the list have different nutritional offenses ranging from excessive caloric content to high amounts of sugar, trans fat, and sodium. However, the list does not simply "shame" the offenders, but also provide healthier alternatives that people can get in the same restaurants. Here are some of the worst foods in America, which you can read in full at Men’s Health Magazine’s website.

Outback Steakhouse’s Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing – The list branded it as "The Worst Food in America." A single serving of this appetizer has a whopping 2,900 calories (an equivalent of 14 Krispy Kreme doughnuts), with 182 grams of fat, and 240 grams of carbohydrates. Even if you split the fries with two of your friends, you will still end up with a complete meal’s worth of calories. As an alternative, they suggest to order either the Seared Ahi or Shrimp on the Barbie, both with high protein content.

McDonald’s Chicken Premium Breast Strips with Creamy Ranch Sauce, 5 pieces – It is included in the list as "The Worst Fast Food Chicken Meal," with 830 calories, 55 grams of fat (not to mention 4.5 grams of dreaded trans fat), and 48 grams of carbs. Five pieces of these breaded chicken breasts strips are equivalent to 20 McNuggets. Add the large fries and regular soda and the meal totals to 1,710 calories. Instead, order a Mickey D’s six-piece McNuggets with BBQ sauce and save up to 530 calories.

Ruby Tuesday’s Bella Turkey Burger – This burger was called "The Worst ‘Healthy’ Burger." Despite the fact that turkey is a healthier meat choice, this food comes at an astounding 1,145 calories, 71 grams fat, and 56 grams of carbohydrates. In fact, almost all burgers at Ruby Tuesday go over the 1,000 calorie mark. The researchers recommend to order a 9-ounce sirloin steak with a side of steamed vegetables.

Macaroni Grill’s Double Macaroni ‘n’ Cheese – Kids love mac ‘n’ cheese, but this one you should avoid feeding your children. What was called as "The Worst Kids’ Meal" contains 1,210 calories, 62 grams of fat, and a really high 3,450 milligrams of sodium. Your kid’s best option is to have some Grilled Chicken and Broccoli that only has 390 calories.

Chili’s Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream – A single serving of this decadent dish is equivalent to three Big Macs, making it "The Worst Dessert." It has 1,600 calories, 78 grams of fat, and 215 grams of carbohydrates. Those who insist on taking a dessert in Chili’s should instead take a single serving of its Sweet Shot, which only contains 310 calories.
