Whole body vibration uses a machine that supposedly works your muscles out while you just stand there. A lot of individuals who want to get fit or lose weight are purchasing this contraption in hopes that it could help them reach their goals. But are whole body vibration machines effective?
Effectiveness of whole body vibration
According to Edward R. Laskowski, MD, whole body vibration is not likely to result in measurable weight loss or fitness gains for most healthy adults.
As machine vibrates, your muscles may be forced to react to the vibration. This may help you burn a few extra calories but it is not as effective as physical activity that you start and sustain yourself. Whole body vibration training may also be unsafe to people with certain medical condition such as low back pain.
Benefits of whole body vibration training
Though whole body vibration training is not as effective real exercise, it does have a number of benefits including:
- Boosted bone mineral density in postmenopausal women
- Improved muscle strength in elderly adults and women who have knee osteoarthritis
- Improved balance in elderly women
If you really want to get fit and lose weight, Laskowski says, do not look for short cuts. The key is to eat a healthy diet and incorporate exercise in you daily routine. If you want to try whole body vibration training, do not forget to do other aerobic and strength training activities as well.
