Zumba Pros and Cons

Zumba is a dance-based workout started by Beto Perez. The routines range from ballet boot camp to cardio salsa. The appeal of Zumba is having fun while you workout. Because the moves are essentially dance moves, a workout session could feel like one big party.

Pros

According to Kim Pace, a performance enhancement specialist in Boca Raton, Florida, the best thing about Zumba is that "You’ll burn calories, feel energized, and do moves that-trust me-your body has not done before."

Cons

However, some experts feel that there is something missing from this widely popular exercise trend. "Zumba doesn’t improve strength, and it’s hard for uncoordinated people to keep up with the choreography," says exercise physiologist Becky Williamson, of San Jose, Calif. Some experts agree that indeed Zumba does not do much to build musce. Brad Schoenfeld, certified strength and conditioning specialist and author of the book 28-Day Body Shapeover says, "If you perform the same activity repeatedly, your body won’t change."
