Health Benefits of Physical Activity

swimmingIf you think you’re too tired or too busy to exercise, then maybe you should think about these three things:

Regular physical activity improves your mental health. When you’re done exercising you will have a sense of well-being. Better yet, you will sleep better, lower your chances of depression and anxiety, and improve your problem-solving skills.

Regular physical activity improves your overall health. Because you will have less body fat, more muscle, and better cardiovascular health, you will be less likely to develop heart disease and some forms of cancer. You also will have a stronger immune system and strong bones. This all means a longer, healthier life.

30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week can greatly improve your health by lowering your risk of chronic disease.

60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity activity on most days of the week, (while not going over caloric intake requirements) help manage body weight and prevent gradual, unhealthy body weight gain.

60 to 90 minutes of daily moderate intensity physical activity (while not going over caloric intake requirements) keep weight loss off. You may have to consult your doctor before starting this level of physical activity.

Talk to your doctor about how much exercise is right for you. A good goal for many people is to work up to exercising 4 to 6 times a week for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Remember, though, that exercise has so many benefits that any amount is better than none.
