Alternative Diet Programs

Alternative diet programs are those diet programs that usually aim to improve one’s health through proper choice of food to eat as well as the avoidance of certain types. The approach of such diet programs vary widely from each other. Some alternative diet programs are not only meant to help one lose weight but also to cater to certain needs that may be brought about by a number of diseases and conditions.

There are many different types of alternative diet programs available. Here are just some of them:

The McDougall Plan

This diet program is aimed at reducing one’s risk of certain health problems such as heart and kidney disease, allergies, and even cancers. The McDougall program is based on a strict vegetarian diet that focuses on grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes.

Meats, eggs and dairy products are avoided. Aside from the diet regimen, the program also emphasizes on getting regular exercise, clean air and water as well as adequate sunshine.

Pritkin Diet

The Pritkin diet was developed mainly for people with the risk of developing heart disease. The diet is intended for people to prevent or even reverse heart disease through proper eating. This diet encourages people to eat high fiber foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

It also allows people to eat protein in the form of fish and chicken as well as small amounts of low fat dairy products. The Pritkin diet is considered a low fat and cholesterol diet and is therefore advisable for people who have greater risk of developing heart disease.

The Rotation Diet

The Rotation diet was developed to help people deal with allergies with most foods. It usually comprises of eating food that you are not allergic to on a four-day rotation basis. The reason for this is to allow the body to go through a recovery period before eating again any food that you are allergic to.

The Rotation diet is known to help avoid one from getting allergic to more and more foods. This diet can become pretty restrictive and is usually followed with the guidance of a doctor or a nutritionist.

These and other alternative diet programs claim to help prevent or even cure certain diseases such as cancer and heart disease. But their effectiveness has not been quite thoroughly studied so this remains to be seen.

Following alternative diet programs is considered safe if practiced in moderation. But following a very restrictive alternative diet program may also cause certain nutritional deficiencies and so may need some doctor’s advice prior to the actual practice.
