Understanding The Alkaline Diet

Some are just fad diets while others only cater to people with special needs. It is also important for people to know some of these diets in order to determine if they are safe, effective or right for their type of lifestyle. One of the unique types of diets is the alkaline diet.

The Alkaline diet is a type of diet that focuses on the body’s pH balance. It is said that our bodies need to maintain an alkaline environment in order to stay healthy, keep it functioning well and protect it against infections. But the problem is that many foods that we consume can cause the balance to shift to acid. Any type of food we consume can either release an alkaline or acid base into our system. Our blood, saliva and organ chemistries will undergo changes if we eat more acidic foods.

When the body’s pH becomes acidic, it tries to find an internal source to make it more alkaline. It borrows nutrients from other parts of the body such as calcium, magnesium, potassium or sodium in order to tilt the balance back to an alkaline environment. These neutralizing minerals may sometimes be available or they may not. This process may also use up some of the mineral sources in the body reserved for other essential functions. This can become a problem of mineral shortages in the body become common. It is after the body has an acidic environment when different ailments may begin to develop.

In order to maintain an alkaline environment, people need to follow a diet composed of foods that are alkaline-based. That is why the alkaline diet is mainly based on eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Meats are considered as acid-based and are not usually part of an alkaline diet.

Among fruits, avocado is known to be the best choice among alkaline fruits. Other fruits usually included in the diet are bananas, lemons, limes, figs and melons. Vegetables are also known to have low pH levels. Good examples include dark green vegetables like kale, broccoli and cucumber. Root vegetables such as beets, radishes, turnips, potatoes, and yams are also good alkaline foods. For protein, tofu is considered the best choice as an alkaline food. Other good protein sources are almonds, millet and chestnuts.
