In a time when people are getting more and more obsessed with rapid weight loss and unhealthy dieting, drugs that suppress appetite pose a serious threat to our health. Weight loss drugs have been a controversial subject for many years now. On the one hand, many people praise this drug as an instrument for looking good and building self-esteem. On the other, some people see diet pills as deadly chemicals.
What is phentermine?
Phentermine is one of the most popular weight loss drugs available in the market today. This little blue-and-white appetite-suppressant pill is related to amphetamines, stimulating the release of brain chemicals that can reduce our appetites. This makes us feel like we have to eat very little or we do not need to consume food at all.
However, a recent International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) report revealed that phentermine is one of the most abused prescription drugs worldwide.
Phentermine: Effective weigh loss pill?
A quick look on the Internet will show thousands of web pages full of encouraging testimonials from very satisfied women who tried taking phentermine. Many of them claim they have lost a significant amount of weight in disturbingly short period of time. This is something that would not have happened to them if they had tried to lose unwanted pounds the old-fashioned way.
Phentermine side effects
However, most people who share their "great" experiences with phentermine seem to forget to mention the drug’s common side effects. These include chest pain, mood swings, irregular heartbeat and tremors. What is worse, an overdose can induce seizures, hallucinations, blurred vision, severe headaches, and vomiting.
According to Hamid Ghodse, United Nation’s INCB former president, this drug is highly addictive. "Users can experience painful withdrawal symptoms, including nausea, headaches and convulsions, when they try to stop taking the drug," he says.
Using this drug can also lead to insomnia. Sleep deprivation, partnered with abnormal weight loss can cause extreme behavior changes. Users often experience mood swings, hallucinations, anxiety, and paranoia. They also sometimes become violent.
The side effects of phentermine is scary enough, but what makes this drug scarier is the fact that it can be readily purchased on the Internet, from online pharmacies. This is despite the drug ban in many countries. The catch here is that the ban on using this drug without a doctor’s prescription is not applicable to overseas pharmacies selling phentermine via the web.
