Insulin Resistance Diet

Many research have shown the role of insulin in gaining body fat, and people who have insulin resistance tend to gain fat at a faster rate. This is why a pair of medical doctors have authored a book connecting insulin resistance and diet to achieve weight loss. Many studies have shown that there is a connection between glucose, insulin, and body fat, with insulin having an ability to store excess glucose in the body as fat.  Because of this, a team of doctors devised an eating plan that aims to control insulin levels.

The gist

Whenever you consume a carbohydrate, whether it is a piece of bread or even a slice of an apple, your body breaks the food into glucose that you body use in order to function.  However, if you have more glucose than your body needs, your pancreas then secretes insulin which takes in all of the excess glucose and stores it as fat.  Additionally, not everybody has insulin resistance, and those who do have the ability to store fat at a faster pace.

To aid dieters about controlling insulin levels while shedding off the excess fat, Doctors Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman authored "The Insulin-Resistance Diet:  How to Turn Off Your Body’s Fat-Making Machine."  Both doctors are residents at a medical weight clinic and used their expertise to help people who have insulin resistance to lose weight.

The Insulin Resistance Diet consists of eating guidelines that do not deprive you from eating carbs and other sweet foods.  What you do is to "link" these foods so that your body starts to produce less insulin.  For instance, you need to pair good carbohydrates, proteins, and good fats in every meal and snack so that your insulin and glucose levels remain balanced.  You also need to eat every two to three hours in order to prevent any massive spikes or dips in blood sugar levels.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Insulin Resistance Diet has a level of reliability, especially that the book is authored by two medical weight loss experts, enabling you to develop an eating plan based on science and research.  The book also contains 45 recipes as well as many ideas about dining in, eating out, or at the office.  Although this program does not inhibit you from eating certain types of foods, portion control is still important.  People with diabetes may also find this diet very beneficial.

However, because you have to eat more frequently than usual, the Insulin Resistance Diet may be difficult to follow at first.  The diet is also not recommended for people who are allergic to dairy and wheat products, as well as gluten.
